  • WET INGREDIENTS
  • 7 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • DRY INGREDIENTS
  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 heaping tablespoon dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • EGG BRUSH
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • SYRUP
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions

  • 1. In a bowl, mix all the wet ingredients except the eggs with a hand or stand mixer until combined.
  • 2. Add one egg at a time while mixing with the mixer until combined.
  • 3. To a different bowl, add all the dry ingredients. Mix well.
  • 4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and work into a dough.
  • 5. Knead the dough for 5 minutes.
  • 6. Place the dough in a clean bowl and refrigerate for at least 6 hours (preferably overnight).
  • 7. Place chilled dough on a work surface and divide in half.
  • 8. Work each part with a rolling pin into a large. very thin rectangle.
  • 9. Spread Nutella and top with crushed nuts if you like.
  • 10. Roll the dough, pressing lightly, from the long side to form a long log.
  • 11. Cut each log in half lengthwise.
  • 12. Cross the two parts at the center to form an X, then twist the two parts of dough from the center of the X toward the end.
  • 13. Place in a loaf pan, cover with a clean kitchen towel and let rise for 45 minutes.
  • 14. Preheat oven to 315F.
  • 15. Beat one egg with one tablespoon of water. Before babka is ready to go in the oven, brush it with the egg mixture.
  • 16. Bake for 35 minutes or until golden brown.
  • 17. Just before the babka is ready, melt 1/2 cup sugar in 1/2 cup water in a pot on the stove top to form a syrup. Bring to boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 3 or 4 minutes stirring frequently. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly for a few minutes.
  • 18. When babka is ready, remove from the oven, place on a wire rack and brush with the syrup.
  • 19. Let babka cool before serving.
  • 20. Dont forget the coffee!!
