Description

I served this bread pudding at the first Christmas dinner I made for my in-laws. Everyone loved it! —Jennifer Dignin, Westerville, Ohio

A year ago I rated this incredibly de-lish bread pudding, but I now must add a couple more comments...It has become one of most requested desserts; in fact, when family or friends find out that I'm making it, they invite themselves over...so I've discovered it's best to make two pans to make everyone happy.Even those who wrinkle their noses to the idea of "bread pudding" are won over. And finally, one of my guests for Thanksgiving dinner is a professional chef, and he said if this was served in a restaurant, he'd order this bread pudding every time. Nice!Be sure to use the Cinnamon Swirl bread (in the Pacific NW it's Franz "Bainbridge Island" brand) and make the sweet milk sauce.F-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c!

Wow! So good! I too used the Cinnamon Swirl bread and the cranberries. I wasnt going to make the sugared milk sauce but it was really good with the bread pudding. My dinner guests are talking about it weeks later...thats a keeper!

I usually always read reviews from others and whether I like, love or hate a recipe, I usually never leave reviews but for this recipe, I just had to because it was just that good. I used Cinnamon Swirl bread as suggested by another reviewer and dried cranberries because I am not a big raisin fan. The tanginess of the cranberries and Granny Smith apples so complimented this pudding. It was fabulous. I made no changes to the recipe at all and I LOVED it so much that it will be a regulare dessert in my house. It was PERFECT! Thank you for the recipe. I loved it so much that I have already recommended it to all my friends and family and even posted the recipe link on my FB page.

Ingredients

  • 8 cups day-old bread cubes, crust removed
  • 2 medium tart apples, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries or raisins
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • CREAM SAUCE:
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons vanilla or rum extract
  • Dash ground cinnamon and nutmeg

Directions

  • Directions In a bowl, combine the bread cubes, apples and cranberries. Transfer to a greased 11-in. x 7-in. baking dish. In a bowl, combine the egg yolks, eggs, cream, milk and sugar. Pour over bread mixture. Place dish in a larger baking dish. Fill larger dish with boiling water halfway up the sides. Bake at 350° for 50-55 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Remove from water bath. Cool for 15 minutes. For the cream sauce, in a saucepan, combine cream and sugar. Cook and stir until sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat. Stir in the vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Serve warm with pudding. Yield: 6-8 servings.
